Pitstop Cafe Photo Wall

Pitstop Cafe had recently turned 3 and through these years we had taken tons of pictures. So what I decided to do is to embark on a little project of consolidating and organizing all the photos that we had and make it into a giant online photo wall.

It is finally completed.

Do check out the Pitstop Cafe Photo Wall. See if you can find yourself among the photos!

Thanks for being a part of Pitstop Cafe.

Why do we eat log cakes on Christmas?

Ever wonder why do people eat log cakes during Christmas instead of a Santa Claus cake? Here is the story...

Once upon a time, there lived a man named Santa Claus. Santa was thin and scrawny, a bit like me and was doing this startup of giving presents to the kids. Life was tough as he had to trek over miles with a gunny sack just to deliver presents to the kids. The startup become successful and more kids started to ask for presents. Even after removing the bad kids, there were still way too many kids for him to handle.

The magic oak tree saw this and said to Santa, "I will sacrifice for you. Chop me down and use the wood to make yourself a flying sleigh so that you don't have to carry all the presents." The rest is history. Rudolph the Red-Nosed reindeer and his gang got hired to pull the sleigh. Santa Claus from then on flies and uses the chimney instead and due to the lack of exercise, he also put on more weight. Look at his tummy and you know what I mean.

As time progresses, we don't see much of Santa Claus anymore. The reason is that globalization has placed too much of demand on him. Though reindeers are not linked to the price of diesel, the cost of ERP and the financial crisis had resulted in Santa Claus cutting down on his travelling expense. In fact I heard that Santa Claus will be retrenching some of the reindeers too and outsource the job of giving presents to us. This is also why you see crazy crowd doing Christmas presents shopping at Orchard Road.

Last but not least, we would also eat log cakes to remember the sacrifice made by the magic oak tree and at the same time shout out,

Merry Christmas!

xmas

The end.

Frequently Asked Questions

I thought it might be a good time to create a section to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

Is Pitstop Cafe halal certified?
We are not halal certified because it is a complicated process. However we do not serve pork and our food suppliers are halal certified. In summary, no halal but no pork.

Why don't we have a game menu?
We realize that game menu is pretty useless. Most of the games have description that sound nicer that it actually this. Furthermore some of the board games could be pretty complicated to learn for those who are new to board games. Hence for a better gaming experience, we would normally ask you for the type of games that you like and recommend something that is popular and suitable to your group.

hmmm I got to think through what are the other interesting common questions. At the meantime, if you have a interesting questions about Pitstop Cafe, do leave a comment!

Sharing the joy of board games

On the 22nd of November, En Community Services Society (ECSS), a Voluntary Welfare Organization, held a half-day Board Games event targeting the youths at Changi South Lane. Although Pitstop Cafe is a small, that did not stop us from trying to do a part of this event. Together with NTU FastForward, we lend our hands to such a meaningful cause, providing both manpower and the games. The event was a success, with over 40 participants.

Check out some of the pictures...

The NTU FastForward team that did a wonderful job in supporting this event.

What a better way to end the day with a nice dinner with the whole team.

I like to thank Jonathan and team from En Community Services Society for providing us with this opportunity to take part in this event. Last but not least, a big big thank to the great team from NTU FastForward Board Games Club. We would not be able to do much without the support from you guys!

Thanks for making the event a success!

What a Wonderful PMS

This month PMS must be the one with the heaviest flow. Friends bringing more friends, packed our humble cafe with lots of fun and laughter. Despite the focus on heavy strategy games, it was nice to see that we have quite a few ladies who join in as well!

Special thanks to ex-Pitstop crew like Carolin, Smith, Chris and Alfie for not only participating but also helping out with the meetup. Also have to give credit to current crew, Yvonne and Mervin for making constant rounds of refilling the drinks.

It was great to see both the regulars as well as new faces. To view more pictures, do visit Pitstop Cafe on Facebook. I have seen a lot of familiar faces but have yet to remember all the names. Old folks like me tends to be more clumsy and forgetful so help me out by tagging the photos too!

It was great to be able to bring out some of the good games like Hansa and Puerto Rico as well as new games like Kingsburg.

Thanks again for everyone for coming and taking part and we hope that all of you had a great time!

Do leave your suggestions on how you would like us to improve on our future meetups.

Compliments

Hey! (: I went to your cafe yesterday and your crews were all really friendly, helpful and nice. Pls help me say thank you to them! Those who were on shift at about 10pm. They gave us a warm and cosy feeling and it was really awesome! I'll drop by again soon. Thanks alot!
-Amelia Wun

I like to say thanks to the wonderful Pitstop team who have made this possible. I think it is a constant reminder to us that people do notice and appreciate good service if we take pride in it ourselves. We know that we are the best, that is why we try harder.

Special thanks to Fernie, Haopeng & Dickson for the job well done! Also thanks to Chao Turtle for making sure everything went well that night.

Another great PMS

Organizing the Pitstoppers Meetup Session (PMS) can be really tiring but all the fun that comes with it is makes it worthwhile. Tonight we had another successful meetup with a good mix of new faces, members and our ex crews.

Some of the gems in Euro games are introduced. Even hard core games like Powergrid make it to the table this evening.

Intense negotiation with I'm the boss

When it comes to negotiation, girls always seem to have the advantage especially if they start using lines such as, "If you love me, you will only want million dollar", etc. So you want to lost the date or lost the game? :)

Even heavy weight games like Powergrid make it to the game table. Really happy to bring this game to the table, afterall it isn't everyday you get board gamers that know how to appreciate the heavier Euro games.

Pitstop Cafe, an insider story

The past few months, from leaving TP till enlistment, has been the busiest period of my life so far and at the same time the most fulfilling. The period where I've taken more risks than the whole of my life added together, and where most of them paid off. The whole Pitstop period has also been more than just a "part-time" job as I had initially intended it to be (considering that I'm almost full-time over there but of course that's not what I mean :D).

Pitstop Cafe has been, in many ways, a direct catalyst and influence on my life, from the very tiresome late nights to meeting the most awesome girl ever (haha). To put it simply, I've gained a lot spending the past 4 months there, and I'm not talking about just the girl (though she pretty much sums up the experience :). Working there has in many ways fulfilled several muses of mine, of which included teaching. Yet, teaching can get really annoying most of the time (which explains the crazy teachers you get back in school), but the thing that keeps making you want to come back to it is that it creates a great deal of satisfaction. Of course, the free food/drinks at Pitstop helps as well. It has also been the closest thing to what people call "playing at work, and getting paid for it". The pay wasn't marvelous, but of the things to complain about, this mattered the least because in the most clichéd of phrases - it's the experience that counts.

I would also like to go on talking about the people. Just a fun fact first. It is/was the place that held the largest congregation of smart people, in terms of proportion to size considering how small Pitstop was. Much of the staffs there (with the exceptions of me, Bryan, Winston and Joey) were either pursuing degrees, or have completed degrees in either NUS(!) or NTU(!!). We even had a PSC scholar who managed 7(I think?) distinctions for her 'A' levels. With the amount of smarts, you would have expected a rather stressful, competitive atmosphere, but no there wasn't. The people were as down-to-earth as you could have it, albeit a little crazy sometimes. We all get cranky when we're tired. It’s weird.

This also brings me to what I would like to talk about, the earnestness of the people that builds the Pitstop experience. While working there, you realise that Pitstop is unlike any other cafe. There is none of that stifled feel of pseudo-classiness which standard cafes give, and none of that smiling waiter standing by the sides waiting to take your orders. In one of the bosses' own words, it’s called "casual". At Pitstop, it’s all about the shouting, and though it honestly gets very irritating when you can't hear anything over the customers screams, you still find yourself smiling. It didn't honestly feel like a job in most ways, instead, it felt more like a gathering of friends. The bosses, especially Evelyn and Weekee, would have gotten the Best Local Employer Award if there was one, or the Not Funny Jokes Award on better hindsight. Where would you find a place where you could order the bosses around (which I try not to do), get muffins to eat at night, enjoy home-cooked food by the in-house chef (haha), or just sit around and play games.

And then you also get people like Cameron who creates another kind of atmosphere altogether. All the constant jokes about one particular person. Or just anyone else who isn't around.

P.S. Tell him he’s a $%#@ pangseh kia for me. He’ll understand.

All in all, it has been fun. And on behalf of Bryan (though he probably doesn’t want to say this) and Joey – Thanks. :)
Oh, and I’ll be back after I grow back my hair.

Shoutouts to Zed, Winston, Alfie, Carolin, Cam, Shuyu, Sylvia, Haopeng, Adeline, Cherie, Yvonne, and whoever else that is working playing.

喜怒哀乐

Folks that come to Pitstop Cafe are a fun lot. Apart from the board games, they enjoy taking lots of pictures. I saw one of the group posing in a variety of mood and took the chance to snap a few shots as well.

Presenting the 喜怒哀乐 folks...

I think the most difficult poses are 喜 and 乐 because it is hard to show the differences. Anyway for me all the 4 poses are tough. If I ever do the 4 poses, I think I will end up with 4 identical photos.

They even got pose for 1 to 5. These folks are pro!

Special thanks to all of you for the poses. It was really fun and I hope you guys had a great time too! :)

First Board Games Meetup , Mission Accomplished.

Yeah, Pitstop Cafe finally had our first board games meetup! I was pretty worried that our virgin attempt could not get enough participants. To my surprise, we had more than 20 people turn up, babes and hunks included. It was nice to see some new faces, regulars as well as ex-Pitstop crew like Smith, Chris and Carolin.

It is also funny to see their real identity. Especially if you have folks with names like Batman signing up. Some were registered as male turns up to be female. All sort of interesting folks.

Check the pictures below:

2008_01120016
The first few to turn up

Since the theme was "Around the World", we picked the following games:

2008_01120042
Ticket to Ride Europe. Carolin did Pitstop proud by winning the game :)

2008_01120024
Ticket to Ride Marklin...

Thurns and Taxis

2008_01120023
and Around the World in 80 Days

2008_01120051
Even got special guest Si Mi Fu from China...

Of course, how can we forget to take a group pic. A pity that some left earlier.

More pictures are viewable in the forum so check it out!

Thanks everyone for the support and Alfie for the organizing the program. Hope you guys made new friends and enjoyed yourselves! Feel free to share your thoughts and add in suggestions for future meetup.
