Another great PMS

Organizing the Pitstoppers Meetup Session (PMS) can be really tiring but all the fun that comes with it is makes it worthwhile. Tonight we had another successful meetup with a good mix of new faces, members and our ex crews.

Some of the gems in Euro games are introduced. Even hard core games like Powergrid make it to the table this evening.

Intense negotiation with I'm the boss

When it comes to negotiation, girls always seem to have the advantage especially if they start using lines such as, "If you love me, you will only want million dollar", etc. So you want to lost the date or lost the game? :)

Even heavy weight games like Powergrid make it to the game table. Really happy to bring this game to the table, afterall it isn't everyday you get board gamers that know how to appreciate the heavier Euro games.

Pitstop Cafe, an insider story

The past few months, from leaving TP till enlistment, has been the busiest period of my life so far and at the same time the most fulfilling. The period where I've taken more risks than the whole of my life added together, and where most of them paid off. The whole Pitstop period has also been more than just a "part-time" job as I had initially intended it to be (considering that I'm almost full-time over there but of course that's not what I mean :D).

Pitstop Cafe has been, in many ways, a direct catalyst and influence on my life, from the very tiresome late nights to meeting the most awesome girl ever (haha). To put it simply, I've gained a lot spending the past 4 months there, and I'm not talking about just the girl (though she pretty much sums up the experience :). Working there has in many ways fulfilled several muses of mine, of which included teaching. Yet, teaching can get really annoying most of the time (which explains the crazy teachers you get back in school), but the thing that keeps making you want to come back to it is that it creates a great deal of satisfaction. Of course, the free food/drinks at Pitstop helps as well. It has also been the closest thing to what people call "playing at work, and getting paid for it". The pay wasn't marvelous, but of the things to complain about, this mattered the least because in the most clichéd of phrases - it's the experience that counts.

I would also like to go on talking about the people. Just a fun fact first. It is/was the place that held the largest congregation of smart people, in terms of proportion to size considering how small Pitstop was. Much of the staffs there (with the exceptions of me, Bryan, Winston and Joey) were either pursuing degrees, or have completed degrees in either NUS(!) or NTU(!!). We even had a PSC scholar who managed 7(I think?) distinctions for her 'A' levels. With the amount of smarts, you would have expected a rather stressful, competitive atmosphere, but no there wasn't. The people were as down-to-earth as you could have it, albeit a little crazy sometimes. We all get cranky when we're tired. It’s weird.

This also brings me to what I would like to talk about, the earnestness of the people that builds the Pitstop experience. While working there, you realise that Pitstop is unlike any other cafe. There is none of that stifled feel of pseudo-classiness which standard cafes give, and none of that smiling waiter standing by the sides waiting to take your orders. In one of the bosses' own words, it’s called "casual". At Pitstop, it’s all about the shouting, and though it honestly gets very irritating when you can't hear anything over the customers screams, you still find yourself smiling. It didn't honestly feel like a job in most ways, instead, it felt more like a gathering of friends. The bosses, especially Evelyn and Weekee, would have gotten the Best Local Employer Award if there was one, or the Not Funny Jokes Award on better hindsight. Where would you find a place where you could order the bosses around (which I try not to do), get muffins to eat at night, enjoy home-cooked food by the in-house chef (haha), or just sit around and play games.

And then you also get people like Cameron who creates another kind of atmosphere altogether. All the constant jokes about one particular person. Or just anyone else who isn't around.

P.S. Tell him he’s a $%#@ pangseh kia for me. He’ll understand.

All in all, it has been fun. And on behalf of Bryan (though he probably doesn’t want to say this) and Joey – Thanks. :)
Oh, and I’ll be back after I grow back my hair.

Shoutouts to Zed, Winston, Alfie, Carolin, Cam, Shuyu, Sylvia, Haopeng, Adeline, Cherie, Yvonne, and whoever else that is working playing.

喜怒哀乐

Folks that come to Pitstop Cafe are a fun lot. Apart from the board games, they enjoy taking lots of pictures. I saw one of the group posing in a variety of mood and took the chance to snap a few shots as well.

Presenting the 喜怒哀乐 folks...

I think the most difficult poses are 喜 and 乐 because it is hard to show the differences. Anyway for me all the 4 poses are tough. If I ever do the 4 poses, I think I will end up with 4 identical photos.

They even got pose for 1 to 5. These folks are pro!

Special thanks to all of you for the poses. It was really fun and I hope you guys had a great time too! :)

First Board Games Meetup , Mission Accomplished.

Yeah, Pitstop Cafe finally had our first board games meetup! I was pretty worried that our virgin attempt could not get enough participants. To my surprise, we had more than 20 people turn up, babes and hunks included. It was nice to see some new faces, regulars as well as ex-Pitstop crew like Smith, Chris and Carolin.

It is also funny to see their real identity. Especially if you have folks with names like Batman signing up. Some were registered as male turns up to be female. All sort of interesting folks.

Check the pictures below:

2008_01120016
The first few to turn up

Since the theme was "Around the World", we picked the following games:

2008_01120042
Ticket to Ride Europe. Carolin did Pitstop proud by winning the game :)

and Around the World in 80 Days

Even got special guest Si Mi Fu from China...

Of course, how can we forget to take a group pic. A pity that some left earlier.

More pictures are viewable in the forum so check it out!

Thanks everyone for the support and Alfie for the organizing the program. Hope you guys made new friends and enjoyed yourselves! Feel free to share your thoughts and add in suggestions for future meetup.

Say Cheese!

It is always a joy to see all the fun poses that people do when taking their photos at Pitstop Cafe.

2008_07080054

This is also why at Pitstop Cafe, apart from providing printing service for the photos, we also upload the pictures online for you to view it and remember the fun times that you had!

The problem is that uploading the pictures can be a pretty time consuming process. So the question to all you folks is that are you guys aware that you can access your pictures online? Is this a service that you find useful?

So share your thoughts with us. This will help me to better gauge on how often we should upload the photos.

We love pleasing you guys so do drop us your comments!

Happy Birthdays!

Yesterday must be the day where all the planetary elements aligned. We got 4 folks celebrating their birthdays at Pitstop Cafe.

Check out the pictures! Lotsa of babes!

Now sing along with me with your most sexy voice...

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to all of you, happy birthday to you!"

2008_06290169

Whee! Hot babes! The birthday girl even got one of male staff to do a pole dance sing a birthday song for her.

2008_06290143

More babes!!! The birthday princess was really popular and in the end there were more folks coming for the celebration than the number of pax reserved. Apologies for the squeeze!

2008_06290142

Whee whee whee! It's really getting hot in here!

But there's more. This entry is dedicated to the chioest babe for the day....

2008_06290151

2008_06290155

Aint he hot!!! The one and only Mr Smith.

2008_06290157

Even aunty loves him!

Ok here comes the emotional part. If you don't want to hear an old uncle blabbering away, this is the best time to go back to whatever you are doing.

Seeing Smith really brought back a lot of memories. This is his 3rd birthday celebration at the cafe! From being a customer, to become one our staff, to starting his own career, to putting on extra weight, the relationship has definitely come a long way!

He is one of the many relationships that were forged over the 2 year plus of the cafe humble existence, from the crew to the customers.

While it is impossible for us to know everyone that comes to the cafe, it is always being a delight when the crew see familiar faces back at the cafe

Will there be a 4th birthday or even a 10th birthday celebration at Pitstop Cafe? Nobody knows what the future holds. But what I know for sure is that it has been an amazing journey and it is really a privilege for us to know that Pitstop Cafe has being a part (no matter how tiny) of you.

Sob sob sob....now where is the tissue...

The Trust Game

This is an update for those who had tried the trust game. For me, i had chosen to give 100% in all 3 rounds. The first 2 rounds where not bad, the recipients return half of the overall sum that they received. I then got screwed in the last round when someone got greedy and decided to keep everything!

However base on research studies on the game, generally those who show high level of trust get the best outcome as people in general (excluding those fufus in my case) feel the need to reciprocate.

The surprising finding for this game is that people who show partial trust generally fare worse than those who show very little trust! Another interesting note is that women show greater reciprocity in both punish and reward compared to men.

I guess when it comes to trust, i guess you either show complete trust or total mistrust. Having partial trust usually result in a less than optimum outcome.

Last but not least, the most important point to note....Never offend a women!.

Do you agree with this findings?

Hey That's Rude

I wonder if it is rude to enter someone's conversation. This is what i caught myself sometimes doing it at the cafe.

When i heard customers discussing on the rules of the game or playing the game incorrectly, i sometimes interrupted the conversation without been invited. For example:

"That is not allowed. For 3 and few players, you can only build on one side of the track" - To a small group of players playing the popular Ticket to Ride game and arguing over the interpretation of the rule.
"Actually your opponent will score one point when you passed." - To a Taboo player who is rapidly passing every taboo cards he draw till he got the card with the word "Forehead".

"Eh most Euro games don't use a dice.." - To a customer who was looking lost and asking her friends where are the dices.

"We are just opposite the Shin Pub and above the roast duck store..." - To a customer guiding his lost friends to our secret location.
I read an interesting article recently and it made me wonder that if I was perceive as helpful (i am really trying to be) or was i intrusive or even rude (really not my intention)?

An example was given in the article. Say you were in Dublin, Ireland and you asked someone for direction. Even though people might overheard your request, no one would offer to point you in the right direction. The Irish would consider it rude to enter a dialogue without being directly addressed. Rather than considered being a helpful stranger as one would be in America, you would appear to be intrusive.

So what do you think apply for Singapore? Share your thoughts and let me know if i had being rude.

The Last Words

The last words of a mafia hitman...

Who put the violin in the violin case!!?
hahaaa hope you find that funny.

I believe most of you must be pretty familiar with the mafia theme from both movies and video games.

Did you know that even in board games, there are some pretty fun games based on the mafia theme.

Family Business

This is game on mob warfare and it bring to a new level of backstabbing and revenge, which makes it such a blast to play.

Every player controls a 'family' and plays various cards to try and kill off other players' family mafia members.

Of course with such a game structure, it's possible for everyone to gang up on one unlucky soul, or for the damage to be fairly evenly spread.

Either way, you hope that your mafia family is the last one standing!

Ca$h 'n Gun$

The mafia had finished robbing a bank and now at an abandoned warehouse, the gangsters are splitting the loot.

There is a slight problem. They can’t get an agreement on the split. Well it is up to the guns to do the talking then!

This game is lots of fun with all the bluffing and tough negotiation. Throw in an undercover cop and you will have a killing time with this game!

So if you are looking for some mafia fun, drop by Pitstop Cafe and give these games a try!

Lets play a game

I had played a game in class yesterday which i thought was pretty interesting to share with everyone and see how you guys will play it.

The game consists of 3 rounds. You have to make a decision at the end of each round before you knowing the scenario in the following round.

The story
You have a sum of money which you can choose to give away. Every $1 you give, the recipient get 3 times. So if you give $10, the recipient gets $30. The recipient then has a choice to give you back any amount that he receive, including the option of giving back nothing.

For 3 rounds, there will be different recipients and you don't know how much you are getting back till the end of the 3 rounds. Both parties know about the rules above and the sum of money that you have.

Round 1:
You have $100 as your pool of money. How much would you give? Decide first before scrolling down.

Round 2:
You have $100,000 as your pool of money. How much would you give? Decide first before scrolling down.

Round 3:
You have $1,000,000 as your pool of money. How much would you give?

I had chosen to give 100% of my money. Of course one might say that in real life no one will do that. However the reason for choosing to give 100% is that ideally I believe that it is the best case because i believe that people will reciprocate.

Imagine my shock when some of the participant say that they will give zero because they feel that if they were the recipients, they will give back zero!

I am not sure it is because it is different cultures, different experience or simply because i am naive. Anyway i will share the findings next week on the outcome of this game as well as research findings on this game played with real money when it become available.

So stay tuned and at the meantime share with me how you would play this game.
